That time of the year when purple is in. :)
For starters, the Hildegarde Award for Women in Media started in 2007 as a final events management activity of my senior Mass Comm class in SSC Manila. Now it has become one of the most recognized awards for media practitioners. (If you don't believe me, check with CCP.)
And the tradition continued. After seven years of recognizing women and organizations who push for the feminine cause, this year's awardee is the affable Monique Wilson, a seasoned theater actor and women's rights advocate.
Ironically, Monique portrayed the femme fatale role of Kim in the London staging of Miss Saigon (a not-so-feminist play). But Miss Saigon aside, Monique is behind the New Voice Company, who locally produced Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" a few years ago. This production opened the lines for further conversations on women sexuality and roles in the society.
The Hildegarde Awards also recognizes women artists who are commissioned to design the trophies for the awardees. This year, its the lovely "Diwata" series made by Bicolana artist Maria Magdamit. -
