The News Online Chirstmas party was a bit dull for my standards. I arrived around 9pm and the party ended around 11pm, with nothing much happening in between. There’s food and booze and videoke and gift-giving. But somehow, it felt different—something was missing. Not enough bonding time, perhaps? Or probably because I never get to sing.
Whatever it is, I’m glad my baby liked my present, Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys. I, on the other hand, got a National Bookstore GC worth 300 pesos. It was not in my wishlist but I was happy to receive it—I love buying books. And I love books.
A quick detour to NBS (with GCs in hand, of course) led me to get these titles:
The Position by Meg Wolitzer (Simon & Schuster, 2005; P143.25) revolves on a couple’s book that contains their seemingly explicit sex explorations. The said erotic book became a bestseller, bringing shame to their four children who starts to look at sex differently. Unfortunately, the couple separated after achieving fame and notoriety. Decades after, one of them wants to re-issue the book and that’s when the hurdle begins (again). I bought this because it’s downright straight to the point—sex—but with a domestic face. Come on, didn’t you experience walking in the bedroom and seeing your parents doing the deed?
I’ll go to bed at noon by Gerard Woodward (Vintage, 2004; P214.25) is a domestic farce-turned-tragedy on one of the most infrequent topics: alcoholism. It's been getting such good reviews so it might be worth a read. Aside from that, it got shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2004. I bought it because: 1) its on sale; 2) it has only one copy; 3) it looks interesting; and 4) it is about alcoholism. I’m not sure if it’s a known fact, but my dad went through the same dilemma years back. There’s not much fiction who deals with the same topic, so I’m giving this one a try.
I’m so excited to read these titles, but of course, they have to fall in line. I still have so many titles to read! But I will post reviews once I finished reading these.
