MANILA, Philippines - Rigorous tests, computations, analyses, endless draft designs, revised blueprints, sleepless nights--these are just some of what students from 3 engineering schools had to undergo in the last 7 months as they prepare for the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia race in Malaysia.
In a matter of days, the Team Philippines will be flying off to Malaysia for Shell's first Eco-Marathon in the region, a race where speed is given secondary importance to distance. The main rule of the race is already a feat: Use less fuel but gain more miles.
Three teams from 3 different engineering schools will represent Team Philippines: the Mapua Institute of Technology, the Don Bosco Technical College, and the University of Santo Tomas.
Vehicles designed and made by more than 100 teams from various Asian educational institutions will assemble at the famous Sepang International Circuit, located 15 minutes from the capital Kuala Lumpur, for the race on July 10.
The prototypes--the cars they designed and made from ideas--were shipped out a few days after the send-off party in mid-June, only to be used during the race proper.
